Charlie Brown's Wisdom on Worry - There Are Alternatives

by Eugenia Martini-Jarrett

Worrying is not healthy. We all know that.

"Don't Worry" is one of those "Easier Said Than Done" statements.

Soooo, what do we do to achieve the frame of mind to "Not Worry", or at least "Learn To Worry Less"?

Do you know that
"YOUR WORRYING DOES NOT CHANGE THE OUTCOME OF WHAT YOU ARE WORRYING ABOUT"?

Do you know that
"THE MORE YOU WORRY, THE MORE FEARFUL YOU BECOME"?

There are several tools that I have used in my life and in my coaching to change from "Worry" to "Challenge".

First and Foremost:
When you feel "worry" setting in; stop and analyze WHY you are worried and break down exactly WHAT you are worried about.
An Example of a very common worry:
You are worried about your finances. You don't have enough income to cover your expenses.
  • Do you feel worrying about it is going to solve the problem?
  • Do you feel there are no choices?
  • Do you feel overwhelmed?

Sit down with a pencil and paper and list all the things that you are concerned about regarding your finances, and be honest - EGO should be left outside. Don't despair if you have several pages. The more you break it down, the easier it will be to chip away at your challenges and ease some of your worries.

Next, prioritize the ones you feel are the most important and stressful.

Then take the first one, and only the first one, and start figuring out steps - a plan on how to possibly create a solution. Even a couple of steps are vital...they will lead to more answers.

Starting with your expenses and spending, they will usually bring about some answers and help disclose solutions and issues that are easily adjusted. Analyze your spending. Track every expenditure for at least 7 days. To get a factual accounting, track them for 30 days. You will be amazed to find out where you are spending money that is just a lifestyle, convenience, and not a necessity.

Luxuries can be brought back into your life after you establish a solid and liveable foundation. So don't feel that you are losing all your pleasures. You are only putting them on hold until your foundation is solid and stress-free.

In my counseling sessions, it was eye-opening to find out how much money is spent at "Starbucks" on a monthly basis. Some of my clients went to Starbucks every morning before work and had a Macchiato Latte. Approximately $6. It's only $6! :).

Now calculate that times 5 - $30 per week (that's without the tip) which equals $120 a month. Could you use another $120 per month? Could you make coffee at home, add the goodies, and take it with you, at least a couple of times a week?
You do have choices.

Cutting back on going out to eat, shopping less, not buying as many Starbucks, readjusting menus, preplanning outings, and taking picnic baskets instead, etc.

And what about the "Must Have" Amazon buying needs? Try putting everything into the cart, then reviewing it, and putting as much as possible into the "LATER" section. You'll be surprised how much you can put off until the money is available.

As you engage in figuring out how to resolve each issue, your stress and worry will turn into motivation and purpose, then accomplishment and success.

Remember 'ONE STEP AT A TIME'!

Other "Worry Reducing Solutions" are:
  • Read a book - when worry starts flooding your mind. Have a specific book ready to read - easy to reach for.

  • Go exercise or get active in some way. Talk a walk, play tennis, bowling, etc. CHANGE YOUR MINDSET and get the endorphins to do their job.

  • Go, volunteer - help someone, whether family, friend, or organization that could use your love and compassion.
Remember:
"Worrying won't change the outcome of the problem, however, you will accomplish harming your mental and physical health. Take charge, make changes, and stop worrying!"
