Give yourself a moment to pause—and your hopes a chance to guide you.
It’s amazing how much fear can influence our lives without us even realizing it. We put something off, talk ourselves out of an idea, or stay with what feels familiar. There may be something we would love to do, but before we’ve given it much thought, we’ve already found several reasons why we shouldn’t.
And that’s understandable. We’ve all had experiences that made us more careful. When something has hurt or disappointed us, we naturally want to protect ourselves from feeling that way again.
Still, I wonder how often we give our fears more attention than we give our hopes.
Sometimes we worry about what other people will think. Will they understand? Will they approve? We might find ourselves agreeing to something because everyone around us seems so certain, even though something inside us is asking for a little more time.
Money can bring up fear as well. Our responsibilities are real, and caring for ourselves and our families matters. Giving a dream some attention can include looking honestly at the cost, making a plan, or finding a smaller, more affordable place to begin.
Fear can also hurry us along. In the heat of the moment, we may feel we have to answer, commit, or act right now. We worry about disappointing someone, missing an opportunity, or being left out. It can be difficult to hear our own thoughts with so much happening around us.
“It is often the small steps, not the giant leaps, that bring about the most lasting change.” — Queen Elizabeth II
Whenever possible, give yourself a little breathing room. Sleep on it. Look at the decision from several angles. Talk with someone who will listen with care and respect your right to choose.
Then gently ask yourself:
- What do I want?
- What is best for me and my family?
- Does this support the life I’m hoping to build?
- How might this affect someone else?
- Could my choice cause harm, and is there a kinder way forward?
These questions deserve a little time. They help us bring our hopes, responsibilities, and care for others into the same conversation. Maybe start a journal to help you actualize your hopes and dreams - even your goals.
And somewhere in that conversation, remember to ask:
What do I hope for in my life?
Perhaps you hope for more peace, a stronger connection with your family, room to create, or work that feels meaningful. Perhaps you would simply love to wake up feeling a little more at home in the life you are living.
Those hopes matter. They can help guide the everyday choices as well as the bigger ones.
Trusting ourselves doesn’t require knowing exactly how everything will turn out. We can gather information, listen to our hearts, and make the most thoughtful choice we can with what we know. We can also learn, adjust, and be kind to ourselves along the way.
We may still feel a little afraid. That’s okay. We can meet that feeling with compassion and give our hopes a voice, too.
There may be something lovely waiting to begin with one thoughtful choice.

A journal can be a lovely space to explore what matters to you, work through a decision, or let a new idea unfold.
