More than 500 million years ago, ancient seas slowly evaporated beneath the sun, leaving behind vast beds of mineral-rich crystals. Over millions of years, these deposits were buried deep within the Earth and preserved until they were eventually uncovered in regions near today's Himalayan mountain range. What we know as Himalayan pink salt is the result of one of Earth's oldest geological processes—not modern manufacturing.
Natural Himalayan salt is composed primarily of sodium chloride, just like table salt. The difference is that it also retains small amounts of naturally occurring trace minerals—including iron, potassium, magnesium, and calcium—that remain part of its original geological composition. These minerals give Himalayan salt its distinctive pink color and remind us that salt was never created by nature as simply purified sodium chloride.
It's important to keep those minerals in perspective. They occur in relatively small amounts and are not a substitute for a healthy, nutrient-rich diet. Whole foods remain our best source of essential vitamins and minerals, and current research does not show that Himalayan salt provides these trace minerals in amounts large enough to replace those foods.

So why does Himalayan salt matter?
Because it tells an important story.
Modern table salt is refined to produce a highly consistent product composed almost entirely of sodium chloride. This makes it uniform in appearance, free-flowing, and ideal for manufacturing. In many countries, iodine is then added to refined table salt to help prevent iodine deficiency—one of the great successes of modern public health. Specialty salts, including Himalayan salt, usually contain little or no iodine unless they are specifically labeled as iodized.
But refining also changes salt in ways nature originally created it.
The real conversation isn't whether Himalayan salt is a miracle food.
It isn't. Nor is it about replacing healthy foods with a pinch of pink salt.
Instead, it's about understanding that one of nature's oldest foods originally existed as a complex mineral deposit, and that refining intentionally simplifies it into a highly purified product.
